Port Melville’s  floating concrete wharf was commissioned in 2013.  It provides 220 metres of dock face and has a 15 metre depth alongside in sheltered waters.

The wharf is able to accommodate project offshore support, tankers and vessels up to 50,000 tonnes.

The facility comprises a berth for fuel, project freight, landing barge ramp, bulk cargo and wood chips, a common user facility, a container facility, bulk fuel storage tanks as well as a woodchip stockpile and loadout facility. Fuel bunkering services are also available.

Waste that is offloaded from vessels at Port Melville which presents a potential biosecurity risk will be managed and treated by Port Melville management in accordance with Department Of Agriculture, Northern Territory and Tiwi Island quarantine requirements.

A berth reservation system applies at Port Melville, entitling vessels that meet specified requirements to receive a berthing window.  This requires advance application prior to arrival.  Ships without prior reservations will be allowed to berth under the direction of the Port Manager, usually in order of arrival, although priority may be granted to any type of vessel in cases of emergency in the public interest.

The Port Melville port is operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Navigation is during daylight hours only, except for emergencies.
